Stress and College Students
It is a well known fact that young people can't wait to escape home and live independent lives, and the college environment can provide them with all they need for experiencing the real world. Once they get there though, away from what they know, away from friends and parents, their attitude towards the sought independence can turn into a difficult and confuse time of their lives.
Most of the times, the stress and college students don't get along too well, causing deep anxiety and depression among younger from all over the world. Even the latest studies confirm the worrying statistics related to stress and college students, indicating that the number of college students experiencing serious stress is progressing. It seems that stress at college students has higher levels than the
stress condition of other people categories.
The main cause of stress at college students is the lack of money. Generally, student debts are closely related to a poor mental state, especially for working students as well. Therefore, the anxiety levels on college students can sometime reach alarming values. Some of the causes of stress at college students are:
* Students always feel pressured and fear that they will not rise to the expectations of their parents, their teachers or the general expectations of the society.
* Another important cause of stress at college students is represented by relationships, both romantic relationships and the life with roommates.
* Living with several strangers as roommates can definitely be a challenge, as each and every one has its own tastes and customs.
* Deadlines are a great stress source, and college students are well aware of that. The learning schedule is pretty stuffed with new information ad disciplines, and the rigors of the college environment don't allow too much flexibility when it comes to papers and exams.
College students have two stressing choices: to pass the exam or to fail the exam and it is clear that the most important option is to pass the exam. Nevertheless, passing an exam is not that easy, leaving few or no time for fun and bonding.
* This takes us to the next cause of stress at college students. College students are confronted with a new range of emotions and stresses, as they are no longer near their supportive families. They find it hard not to be the centre of attention any more, and this generates new stress conditions.
* The pressure of college exams can become sometimes unbearable for some college students, and the sensation is one of continuous depressions, anxiety and helplessness.
Stress and college students are obviously happening everywhere in the world, and in order to prevent any serious damages to the immune system or even mental state, the most important role is taken over by the moral support provided by the students' families.
Friends and family can prevent anxiety and depression by reminding young students that they are close to them no matter what, contact them frequently by phone and constantly encourage them. Stress at college students can be prevented by some simple and effective measures:
* Students should make a group of friends.
* Students should avoid taking lots if trips home during the first semester, in order to accommodate with the new environment.
* College students need to create their own college routine.
* Try to work out some of the stress at the campus gym.
* Get proper rest.
